Hello! My name is Meredith Alden Lewis. I am the writer for Penny's Big Breakaway (2024), and other in-development and unannounced titles.
I write videogames, indie comics, short stories, fanfiction, research papers, educational materials, marketing copy, a bunch of stuff. But what I enjoy the most— and what I've been particularly recognized for— is character voice and dialogue.
My writing philosophy is influenced by my background in comics and visual arts. The watchword is "balance." A painting crawling with detail through every square inch becomes overwhelming; a comic overburdened with text becomes a slog.
The artist should reward exploration, but also guide the viewer's eye to where we need it to go. The writer should create fully-realized characters and worlds, but leave empty space for the audience to hook in their own imaginations. Striking this balance is especially critical in videogames, where audience exploration and identification are foundational.
In short, I think the writer's primary task is to recognize when to hit hard— and when to get out of the way.
Some games with writing I feel strongly about:
- Earthbound / Mother 2
- Final Fantasy 7 (Original flavor)
- Mass Effect Trilogy
- Chrono Trigger
- Renowned Explorers: International Society
- Disco Elysium
